WHO WE ARE:

We are a group of concerned Americans who live in and around Tübingen. We vary in age, education and profession, but we agree that America is on the wrong track.

We call for foreign and domestic policies based on the long-term interests of the American people and the world.

We favor policies based on the active support of and cooperation with the international organizations that America was decisively involved in creating and within the limits of international laws and norms which America was decisively involved in formulating.

We join a long American tradition in calling for an end to policies of empire. We reject the militarization of our economy and our foreign policy.

PROGESSIVE NEWS SOURCES:

Americans living abroad may find the list of online radio programs especially useful for keeping in touch with what is going on at home without having to rely on the German press and the US corporate media. After the radio shows, we list some popular progressive blogs.

Radio Programs
  • Media Matters with Bob McChesney
This is a weekly radio show (airs on Sunday) in which media expert and professor Bob McChesney invites a guest expert. The theme is almost always directly related to media issues. When it isn't and the speaker is a leading progressive thinker or activist, McChesney will often guide the conversation toward media issues. Available as mp3 download.
  • Pacific.org
This is a community radio project which has been running since 1949. The programs include Democracy Now!, Sunday Salon(both listed below) as well as several other shows. The two listed here are the best. Flashpoints and Free Speech Radio News are also of interest. Pacifica also has programming on special events such as judge nominations and hearings.
  • Democracy Now!
Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman is an hour-long program which runs every weekday. It can be viewed online as a TV show or listened to as a radio program. She has progressive and conservative guests as well as up-to-date coverage of progressive issues and events. Available as mp3 download, including an archive of old shows. Highly Recommended!
  • Sunday Salon with long-time activist Larry Bensky.
This is a two-hour show that airs every Sunday morning. Don't let Larry Bensky, who can sometimes come off as a little arrogant, get you off. Not only is he very knowledgeable, he has great guests and covers great issues. Available as mp3 download, including an archive of old shows.
  • Air America Radio
This relatively new project has progressive programming available on internet streaming 24/7. The programs are a real mixed bag. It is very supportive of the Democratic party and supported by advertizing. If the kinds of gimmicks being advertized is any indication of the brainpower of their listenership, then things do not bode well for the mainstream "left". There are occasionally interesting insights and commentaries. Al Franken's show (on in the early evening European time) is usually very funny.
  • Radio Times
with Marty Moss-Coane at WHYY is a daily one-hour show which often features progressive topics or progressive guests. Available as mp3 download, including an archive of old shows.

Tübingen Progressive Americans

We are a small group of progressive Americans living in and near Tübingen.

The Mark Twain Flag

In his 1901 critique of western policies To the Person Sitting in Darkness, Mark Twain proposed a flag for the Philippine Province, newly conquered by the United States: "We could have just our usual flag, with the white stripes painted black and the stars replaced by the skull and cross-bones." For more on Mark Twain and his anti-imperialism, see our blog.
